DATA

THE NINE MEGALO-METROPOLISES IN THE INTERNATIONAL RANKINKS

° THE RICHEST CITIES (by GPD)

The richest cities in 2005 :

(1- Tokyo....  GDP 2005 : 1.191 billions $)

2- New York

GDP 2005 : 1.133 billions $

3- Los Angeles

GDP 2005 : 639 billions $

4- Chicago

GDP 2005 : 460 billions $

5- Paris

GDB 2005 : 460 billions $

6- London

GDB 2005 : 452 billions $

Prediction for the richest cities in 2020 :

(1- Tokyo.... GPD 2020 : 1.602 billions $)

2- New York

GDP 2020 : 1.561 billions $

3- Los Angeles

GDP 2020 : 886 billions $

4- London

GDP 2020 : 708 billions $

5- Chicago

GDP 2020 : 645 billions $

6 - Paris

GDP 2020 : 611 billions $

These results has been published in March 2007 by a study of the consulting company PricewaterhouseCooper about the British economy. Concerning the global GPD, London should be richer than Paris in 2020. London successful development can be explained by the boom due to the growing profits of the financial services. New York gets closer to Tokyo, while Buenos Aires and Moscow gain two places : Buenos Aires from the 13th rank to 11th and Moscow from the 25th rank to 23rd. Except the "mini" Metropolises, Singapore and Berlin, each megalo-metropolis is a huge concentration of richess and is ranked in the TOP 25. A slight forecast growth of the GDP (only 3,6%) shows that Singapore will have to "fight" against emerging countries and face the competiton of cities such as Mumbai, Dehli and Bejing. But the city which falls the most remains Berlin. Because of a ridiculous growth of 1,1%, Berlin will go from the 65th rank (GDP in 2005 : 75 billions) to the 86th  (forecast GDP for 2020 : 88 billions).

° THE MOST EXPENSIVE CITIES

The following informations result from a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers in collaboration with the Unites Nations. This study has been published in March 2008.

Ranking 2007 :

1- Moscow

2- London

13- Paris

14- Singapore

15- New York

42- Los Angeles

45- Berlin

58- Chicago

139- Buenos Aires

Ranking 2008 :

1- Moscow

3- London

12- Paris

13- Singapore

22- New York

38- Berlin

55- Los Angeles

84- Chicago

138- Buenos Aires

New York lost a few ranks and is no longer in the TOP 15 of the most expensive cities. The two other american metropolises also lost a few ranks, which confirms the weakness of the american money. Surprise : Berlin has gone from the 45th rank to the 38th and outripes even Los Angeles which is ranked 17 places after - although LA was 3 ranks before Berlin in 2007..... The position of the other cities has stlightly changed (only one rank), except for Moscow, the only metropolis that goes on dominating the ranking.

° THE RICHEST CITIES ON AVERAGE (by BGP per capita)

(...)

7 London

(...)

11 New York

12 Berlin

(...)

14 Los Angeles

(...)

16 Chicago

(...)

26 Paris (two ranks after Lyon which is 24th)

(...)

36 Singapore

(...)

44 Moscow

(...)

55 Buenos Aires

Surprsingly, Berlin is the third most expensive city on average : even if Berlin is a poor city, there is almost no difference between the city in itself and the urban area. Contrary to that, Paris imposes itself as a luxuous town but once we have considered the whole urban area, the suburbs are part of it. In these extremely poor suburbs are "stuck" immigrants and the lack of structures stops any economic development. Berlin profits from its modest acttractivity. That is precisely the reason why it has a higher BGP per capita than Los Angeles (same problem as in Paris : rich suburbs like Beverly Hills are set next to "slums"), than Chicago or than Singapore. Otherwise, we can't be surprised by the ranking of Moscow and Buenos Aires which are at the end while London and New York dominate it.

° THE BIGGEST URBAN AREAS (by millions inhabitants)

These are the newest forecasts. The concept "urban area" have to be understood in their large meaning. It includes a city in the middle  and all the quarters that are relied to it : like for instance urban areas, which are made of many cities. The Ruhr is a very good example for that.

 Moscow Urban Area

(1- Tokyo 37,2)

2- NY 25,9 (2009)

9- LA 18,5 (2009)

15- Moscow 14,7 (2008)

16- Buenos Aires 14,2 (2008)

21- London 12,4 (2009)

25-Paris 11,8 (2009)

26- Chicago 11,6 (2009)

49- Singapore 6,4 (2008)

100- Berlin 4,0 (2009)

No comment : except Singapore and Berlin, the cities that concern this blog are urban monsters. Dozens of thousands of people pass each other every day in these world "hotspots".

° THE CITIES WITH THE HIGHEST POPULATION DENSITY

(.....)

29- Singapore

43- London

46- Buenos Aires

47- Moscow

65- Berlin

69- Paris

90 -Los Angeles

114- New York

126- Chicago

Once again is the ranking of Berlin amazing. The german capital city has a higher population density than the Région Parisienne. Indeed, the "Grand Paris" is vaster than "Paris intra-muros" and well proportioned (only the 20 Arrondissements within the city). We should not forget that, just like the way the city is structured : the first touristic destination was not built wurde nicht senkrecht gebildet like Singapore, the City or Manhattan. The american cities do not have a high population density ; we all ahve in mind rich suburbs like "Wisteria Lane", which sich kilometerweit around the CBDs herumschlingen.
